Why the legalization of marijuana won't decrease prison time

A lot of people seem to think that if marijuana were to be made legal that it would decrease the amount of pot related arrests because, you know, it would be legal. These are usually the same people who argue that the government should legalize and tax marijuana. Therein lies the problem in my opinion.

For the record I am against the legalization of weed but that's neither here nor there right now.

Let's suppose for a moment that marijuana is made legal all throughout the land and taxed by the government. How many producers would actually pay the taxes? One of the arguments for the legalization of weed is that a plant shouldn't be illegal. How many of the people that use that argument will then use the argument why should I pay taxes on a plant.

You can go away a lot longer for tax evasion then you can for growing pot in your back yard. Remember, that's how they got Al Capone.
